Learn the clicker-training, this extremely effective positive education method, to quickly learn behaviors to your dog and educate him in a positive way, without ever using force.
First, let's start with the origin of clicker training. It all began during the Second World War. At the time, educating animals was a mixture of punishment and reward.
Keller and Marian Breland, who would become the founders of applied animal psychology, then worked at the University of Minnesota. They observe and apply positive reinforcement techniques (food reward when appropriate behavior is performed) on rats. Then the US Army calls them for the war effort, on a top secret project called "Pigeon in Pelican".
At the time, remote-controlled missiles did not exist. Their job is to train pigeons to recognize targets and control the trajectory of bombs with their movements. The project, although advanced, will ultimately not be used, the nuclear bomb is about to be completed.
In 1947, the couple decides to use the fruit of their research for commercial purposes, and creates the Animal Behavior Enterprises, dedicated to using positive reinforcement techniques, to train animals for film, publicity, and public amusement, without ever resorting to force or restraint.
Over the decades, they have been applying positive reinforcement techniques, such as the sound of a clicker or whistle, to reward behavior and train more than 15 000 animals. This is how lovers get to "kindly" train more 150 species, such as dogs, cats, horses, chickens, ducks and other birds, dolphins, killer whales, etc.
It was only at the end of the 80s that their techniques were taken over by the American Karen Pryor, who theorized clicker-training for dog owners, and participated in the dissemination of techniques.
You will discover in a second part specifically devoted to positive education, how a simple "click" can facilitate the education of your dog!
