Why is positive dog education the solution to the use of force?

This article is the first part of a special issue devoted to the positive education of the dog which you can find the second part by following this lien.

Learn the clicker-training, this extremely effective positive education method, to quickly learn behaviors to your dog and educate him in a positive way, without ever using force.

First, let's start with the origin of clicker-training. It all started during the Second World War. At the time, educating animals was a mix of punishments and rewards.

Keller and Marian Breland, who will become the founders of Applied Animal Psychology, are then working at the University of Minnesota. They observe and apply positive reinforcement techniques (food reward when adequate behavior is performed) on rats. Then the US military calls them for the war effort, on a top secret project named "Pigeon in Pelican".

At the time, radio-guided missiles did not exist. Their job is to train pigeons to recognize targets and control the trajectory of bombs through their movements. The project, although advanced, will ultimately not be used, the nuclear bomb is about to be completed.

In 1947, the couple decides to use the fruit of their research for commercial purposes, and creates the Animal Behavior Enterprises, dedicated to using positive reinforcement techniques, to train animals for film, publicity, and public amusement, without ever resorting to force or restraint.

The couple Marian and Keller Breland, founder of positive education

Over the decades, they have been applying positive reinforcement techniques, such as the sound of a clicker or whistle, to reward behavior and train more than 15 000 animals. This is how lovers get to "kindly" train more 150 species, such as dogs, cats, horses, chickens, ducks and other birds, dolphins, killer whales, etc.

It was not until the end of the 80 years, that their techniques were taken over by the American Karen Pryor, who will theorize clicker training for the attention of dog owners, and will participate in the dissemination of techniques.

You will discover in a second part devoted concretely to the positive education, how a simple "click" can facilitate the education of your dog!
